Boys’ Soccer Wins in OT
Minnehaha Academy Boys’ Soccer has had some strong, competitive games against Cristo Rey in recent years. Last year, Cristo Rey beat Minnehaha at Sections due to a last minute goal. It was an incredible goal but didn’t reflect the hard work the Minnehaha boys’ put in during the game.
This year the team was determined to win when they found themselves matched up against Cristo Rey in the section tournament again on October 13, 2018, and the seniors on the team were especially to determined to continue their season.
Cristo Rey scored the first goal just two and a half minutes into the game, leaving some of the Redhawks worried they would not be able to answer with a goal of their own. It was a cold and wet day, but the Redhawks continued to play hard until the end.
The Redhawks made a successful change in their strategy and moved players forward to provide more goal-scoring opportunities. With seven and a half minutes left in the game, Senior Jackson Pope put the ball in the back of the net, leveling the score at 1-1.
The score remained tied at the end of regulation, and put the two teams into a sudden death overtime. Shortly into overtime, Senior Jack Mahler scored a self-assisted volley into the top left corner of the goal, leading the Redhawks to defeat Cristo Rey 2-1. The team and fans stormed the field to celebrate the exciting victory. The game was not only a testament to the boys’ incredibly hard work during the game, but also to the perseverance the team proved throughout the season.
