Spring Sports Previews
What do our spring teams have in store this season? Take a look below to find out! It should be an exciting season ahead, come on out and cheer our Redhawks on!
We enter the baseball season very excited about our potential. We graduated some very good players that will be hard to replace, but we have a large junior class that is ready to step up. We have only 4 seniors, but all 4 are going to play large roles for us this year. Alex Fedje-Johnson and Jesse Retzlaff will again be at the top of our pitching rotation and will give us a chance to win each game. Andrew Wolpert will take over our leadoff position, as well as contribute in centerfield and pitcher. Grant Steinkopf will be our clean-up hitter and will need to produce in the heart of our line-up. The team has high expectations and hopes to return to Target Field this June. Head Coach Scott Glenn is joined by assistant coach Tom Konz this season, along with Joe Protzmann and Tim Foley.
The spring has brought many players to the Boys’ Golf team! We are excited that there are enough golfers to have a JV golf team for this season. The captains include Kevin Cox and Bennett Pope, both seniors. With these numbers, we have a high number of middle school golfers, bringing excitement for the growth of the team over the next few seasons. The team is coached by Head Coach Robb Nelson.
With a young team that graduated zero seniors last season, the Redhawk Girls’ Golf team will look to build on last season’s momentum. The team is led by Head Coach Grant Shafranski, who is in his second year. Led by senior and 2x team captain Tory Kronschnabel, the girls return every varsity player including Georgia Noble (10), Abby Mundschenk (10), Sita Baker (8). Newcomers Iris Holman (11), Lauren Strojny (9), and Cece Schurke (9) look to take the team to new heights in 2016!
Boys’ Tennis has officially started even though “spring” has not! Following the graduation of several top players last year, we are excited about the potential of new Varsity players Arjun Goswitz (9), Henry Pellegrin (9), Josh Radtke (12), Isaac Rose (10), Jayven Williamson (7) and Aidan Keefe (7). The returning players are working hard to help these new players prepare for competition and the team will be led by Jose Williamson in the #1 Singles position. The Head Coach for boys’ tennis is Mark Norlander, with assistant coach Karin Kispert.
Boys’ Lacrosse team is looking forward to its second season as a co-op team. The team includes athletes from Concordia Academy, DeLaSalle High School, Minnehaha Academy, St. Agnes High School, St. Croix Lutheran High School, and St. Paul Academy and Summit School. The team is open to experienced and non-experienced players and is focusing on building experience and knowledge of the sport among our athletes. We are excited about what the team’s new coaching staff will bring: Head Coach Mike Cunningham and Assistant Coaches Andrew Granchalek and Alex Urquhart.
The Girls’ Lacrosse team is excited to welcome back DeLaSalle students in this second year of our cooperative program! Last year, we saw more players new to the sport come out for the team than ever before, which was simultaneously thrilling and challenging. With many returning players this year, we have been able to hit the ground running for a very productive start to the season. While we are looking forward to playing many familiar opponents this year, we are also looking forward to facing some new teams that we haven’t had on our schedule before. As always, our goal is to continue building upon and refining our values of growing stronger as a team athletically, personally, and spiritually. Here’s to an exciting season ahead! Girls’ Lacrosse is coached by Hannah Lundstrom, Callie Good, and Jessie Hughes.
There will be a lot of new faces on the softball field this year. After losing 9 players from last year’s squad and only 4 returning starters from last year’s team, we will be inexperienced. The girls have been working hard and giving great effort in practice, doing their best to pick up the many mental aspects of the game of softball that come up in a variety of situations. The team attitude has been excellent and, with good athletes, I expect that we will continuously improve as the season progresses and have a lot of fun. Softball Head Coach is Mike DiNardo.
The Track team, with Head Coach Kristofor Sauer, had their first official meet this last Saturday. Our gals TEAM is small, but growing. We have a lot of ladies working hard and a lot of ladies who put in significant amounts of work during the off-season and that work is translating into some impressive performances already (in meets but also in practice – which is not something everyone sees). Our guys TEAM is like what I remember from Sunday School – deep and wide (and that’s a description which can apply to physiques and psyches as well as our athletic talent). Essentially, what already a large TEAM continues to grow and both guys and gals are united with a common goal: Lift the cow. Every day.
Middle School Baseball
We are looking forward to another fun and exciting season of Middle School baseball. We have 24 Middle School boys participating, and they have been divided into two separate teams. Our goals are to improve baseball skills, promote teamwork, and have fun. Our biggest challenge is Minnesota’s spring weather and being able to get outdoors to practice and play! The coaches appreciate the enthusiasm and passion for baseball we’ve seen in the players. They will be a fun group to work with. The teams are coached by Jeff Bosshardt, Richard Bowring, and Dan Hauge.
Middle School Track
The Middle School Track team is strong this year with close to 50 participates. Scott Scholl will continue to coach the team this year, along with Collin Quinn in his first year as Middle School Track coach at Minnehaha Academy.
